Lake Bohinj

The largest natural lake in Slovenia is Lake Bohinj. Located 1 hour drive away from the capital of Ljubljana in Bohinj Valley. Surrounding mountains make it one of the most beautiful glacier lakes of the entire Julian Alps and Triglav National Park. Lake Bled

The most famous lake in Slovenia is Lake Bled. You have probably seen it before, the fairy lake with a tiny island and a church on it. It is located on the eastern edge of Julian Alps just outside the Triglav National Park. It takes only 40min to drive here from Ljubljana or 1h 30min from Slovenian Riviera.

Artificially created double lake lies at the meeting point of two mountain streams - Mala & Velika Pišnica. Technicaly speaking it is just out of Triglav National Park. However it is so beaufiul it must be included in this list. There are amazing views towards Mount Razor and bronze statue of ibex. All those details make Jasna one of the most photogenic spots around Kranjska Gora. It will take you 1 hour to come here from Ljubljana.

• There was a swimming pool in 1930s, which was torn down later

• The upper lake (with the tower) has colder water than lower one

• Bronze statue of ibex was made by the same sculptor (Stojan Batič) as the statue of the famous gold-horn in Bohinj

The Triglav Lakes

Triglav Lakes are located in the very heart of the Triglav National Park, surrounded by the most beautiful views in Slovenia. Even though the area is called Seven Triglav Lakes Valley, the number of lakes varies depending on season and weather. Melting snow in the spring or heavy rainfall can raise the number of all lakes and ponds up to 11.

There are 2 mountain huts, one in the middle and one at the end of the valley.

The hut lies in the middle of the Triglav Lakes Valley at 1685 meters. Hikes in the area:

• Hut by Savica (Koča pri Savici) via Komarča past Black Lake - 3h

• Planina Blato pasture (road fee) via Štapce pass - 3h 30min

• Hut by Savica (Koča pri Savici) via Komna hut - 4h 30min

The hut lies at the northern end of the Trtiglav lakes Valley at 2071 meters asl and you can hike there from:

2. Brown Lake (Rjavo jezero) - 2002 m

The second lake is the highest lying of all Triglav Lakes.

Pond in Ledges (Mlaka v Laštah) - 1994 m

Located directly under the Prehodavci hut. It dries up in early summer.

3. Green Lake (Zeleno jezero) - 1983 m

The third Triglav Lake is coloured green because of the algaes.

4. Great Lake or Kidney Lake (Veliko jezero ali Ledvica) - 1830 m

The fourth Triglav Lake is the largest and deepest of all Triglav Lakes. It is named after its shape resembling a kidney.

5. & 6. Double Lake (Dvojno jezero) - 1670 m

The fifth & sixth Triglav Lakes are the most famous and most frequently photographed, since they lie right in front of the Hut by the Triglav Lakes. The two lakes join at high water levels in the spring or after heavy rainfall.

7. Black Lake (Črno jezero) - 1319 m

The seventh Triglav Lake. Lowest lying and therefore the warmest of the Triglav Lakes is located on the edge of Komarča wall. Water levels can vary heavily, even on hourly basis.

Kriška jezera Lakes

Location of these four lakes is on a mountain plateau of Kriški podi between three gorgeous valleys. Vrata Valley on the east, Krnica Valley on the north and Soča Valley (Zadnjica Valley) on the west and south. Between lower and middle lake stands Pogačnikov dom na Kriških podih, a mountain hut at 2050 meters.

Upper Kriško Lake below Križ (Zgornje Kriško jezero pod Križem) - 2154 m

The highest lying Slovenian lake lies right at the northern edge of Kriški podi plateau. Researchers have discovered that water from this lake flows into Krnica Valley with the delay of 3 days.

Middle Kriško Lake below Griva (Srednje Kriško jezero pod Grivo) - 1939 m

A beautiful round alpine lake of spruce green colour. Because it lies in a frost pocket under the Hut at Kriški podi, it is one of the last lakes in Slovenia that gets rid of snow (if at all).

Fourth Kriško Lake below Stenar (Četrto Kriško jezero pod Stenarjem) - 1951 m

Most of the year is hidden under the snow and therefore unknown even by most of Slovene hikers. It lies under Mount Stenar and above the Middle Kriško Lake.

Lower Kriško Lake by the spring (Spodnje Kriško jezero pri studencu) - 1880 m

The biggest of all Kriška jezera Lakes lies next to hiking path to Kriški podi Hut. With its oval shape and grassy shore is a perfect place to take a break after a long hike from the Zadnjica Valley.

Krn Lakes

All of glacial origin, they lie around Mount Krn (2244 m), high above Soča Valley. It is often said that Krn Lakes are the second prettiest lakes in Slovenia - right after the Triglav Lakes.

Hiking to Krn Lake from Lepena Valley

The lake lies in a glacial valley below Mount Krn 20 minutes from a mountain hut Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih (Hut by the Krn Lakes). It will take you 2 hours of easy hiking from Dom v Lepeni (Hut in Lepena). The hut lies just above the treeline of Lepena Valley at 1385 meters. You can can eat and sleep from June until August.

It is also possible to hike to Krn Lakes from Bohinj or Soča Valley.

Lake Krn (Krnsko jezero) - 1391 m 

With over 59.000 square meters, it is the largest mountain lake in Slovenia. It is a habitat of 40 plant species and 24 animal species.

Lake below Montura (Dupeljsko jezero) - 1260 m

This hidden gem lies behind the thick layer of spruce trees in a hollow below the Hut by the Krn Lakes. It is mistakenly named Dupeljsko jezero, but it actually lies below Mount Montura and most people don’t even know about it. Even though it is a tiny lake - it is gorgeous and definately worth visiting.

Lake Lužnica (Jezero v Lužnici) - 1775 m

Lies closer to Mount Krn in glacial valley Peski and is the highest lying of all Krn Lakes.
