Triglav National Park Hiking
THE ONLY NATIONAL PARK IN SLOVENIA
Triglav National Park Hiking
Triglav National Park in Slovenia was established in its modern form in 1981 and is located in the northwestern part of the country, respectively the southeastern part of the Alpine massif. Mount Triglav, the highest peak of Julian Alps, stands almost in the middle of the national park. From it the valleys spread out radially, supplying water to two large river systems with their sources in the Julian Alps: the Soča and the Sava, flowing to the Adriatic and Black Sea, respectively.
National parks in Slovenia
The mountains of the Julian Alps may be majestic, but it is the forest that is the most plentiful in the Triglav National Park, and visitors can hike one of the many well-marked hiking paths or trails. The best time to hike in the Triglav National Park is between late spring and early autumn. The rest of the year, the conditions can be harsh and are suited only for the most experienced hikers. The Soča Trail, the Tolminka troughs, the Triglavska Bistrica Trail in the Vrata Valley, the Pokljuka Trail, and the Radovna Cycle Route are the five main trails in the park. Visitors can tackle trails on their own, or hire a tour guide to show them round. Rock climbing and mountain climbing are also popular activities in the Triglav National Park.
The Triglav National Park extends along the Italian border and close to the Austrian border in the north-west of Slovenia, that is, in the south-eastern section of the Alps. Its territory is nearly identical with that occupied by the Eastern Julian Alps. The park covers 840 square kilometres, or 4% of the territory of Slovenia. The Triglav National Park is one of the oldest European parks; the first protection dates back to 1924 when the Alpine Conservation Park was founded.
Triglav
The origin of the name Triglav owes its name to its characteristic shape as seen from the south-east side or to the highest Slavic deity who was supposed to have its throne on the top of the mountain.
Slovenia Highest Mountain
Triglav is not only the highest mountain in Slovenia with the height of 2,864 m, but is also home to one of the biggest mountain north-walls in this part of the Alps. Triglav is sought after mountain not only due to the fact of being the tallest, but truly is a beautiful mountain with amazing views of the entire range of the Julian Alps. Climbing Mount Triglav though is not an easy task, as the path leading to the top is somewhat exposed and should not be taken lightly.
Triglav National Park covers 60% of Bohinj. Crystal clear waters, diverse landscape and exceptional flora and fauna speak for themselves. Lake Bohinj is the largest natural lake in Slovenia. Nested in the heart of the Julian Alps, this perfectly placed gem is well worth visiting and offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities.
Lake Bohinj provides just one of the major attractions to the park. Other lakes of nearly equal beauty are dotted throughout, along with numerous waterfalls, gorges, rivers, creeks, streams, and mountains of staggering beauty. Bordering Italy on its north-western side Triglav National Park Slovenia is a valuable preservation area of Slovenian flora, fauna and culture. It is also a valuable educational tool for future generations of visitors.
